Good causes and community groups in Middlesbrough, including The Junction Foundation, are set to benefit from a new local lottery.

The Middlesbrough Lottery launched at the end of July, offering ticketholders the chance to win up to £25,000 every week.

Unlike other lotteries, 60% of every ticket sold in the Middlesbrough Lottery will go towards supporting the local community.  50% will go to local good causes, and 10% will support Middlesbrough Council-run cultural initiatives like Orange Pip Market and the Tees Transporter Bridge. The remaining 40% is spent on winnings and administration fees, managed externally.

The Junction Foundation has signed up as an organisation to benefit from the sales of lottery tickets. Ticket buyers can select which good cause to support amongst organisations that have signed up to the scheme, offering an easy and risk-free fundraising opportunity.
Alternatively, ticket buyers can elect to put 60% of their ticket price towards Council-run cultural initiatives.

The Middlesbrough Lottery is externally managed by Gatherwell, who run over 80 community lotteries for local authorities across the UK.
Gatherwell’s community lotteries currently raise over £5million for grassroots community groups and good causes.

Mieka Smiles, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: ‘We know community groups and good causes have been hit hard by the pandemic, with many struggling to stay afloat under the restrictions we’ve all faced.

“The Middlesbrough Lottery provides a fantastic opportunity for these groups to benefit from a free and easy fundraising stream – all they need to do is sign up to the lottery and promote it to their supporters.
“Not only can people win up to £25,000 every single week, but they can do so knowing that a large proportion of their ticket goes towards supporting our local community.

“I’d encourage any good causes or community groups to attend our virtual event and find out more.”

A spokesman for Gatherwell said: “We’ve seen the tremendous positive difference the money raised from community lotteries like this can make for charities and good causes and we wish all the players good luck when they choose to play and support their cause.”
