Teesside University and Local Charities Tackling the cost-of-living crisis together
Local organisations are calling on leaders, decision makers and representatives from across the Tees Valley to come together to tackle the cost-of-living crisis.
Teesside University has teamed up with local charities The Junction Foundation and Footprints in the Community on a new event that brings together allied organisations to address the impact of the crisis in the region.
The Cost-of-living Crisis Response Event, held at the University’s Middlesbrough campus, aims to start a wider conversation about poverty and create a new poverty charter to help local communities.
The hosts will share learning through their research and social action films produced by young people, as well as best practice around supporting people through the cost-of-living crisis.
Dr Cat O’Neill, Clinical Psychologist and Principal Lecturer in Teesside University’s School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Law, said: “Teesside University is proud to be part of this important project that aims to tackle the effects of poverty within our region.
“The Tees Valley sees some of the highest rates of deprivation within the country, but there is some fantastic work being undertaken by local charitable organisations to make a positive difference to the lives of people in our region. This event is a fantastic opportunity to bring together this knowledge and work on a combined strategy.”
Beth Major, Chief Executive at The Junction Foundation said: “The Junction Foundation’s mission is to empower children, young people, and their families to embrace life with confidence, facing life’s challenges in a positive way.
We hope that allied organisations across the Tees Valley will take this opportunity to come together and share our commitment to support those affected by the cost-of-living crisis in our region.

Ruth Fox, Chief Executive Officer at Footprints in the Community, added: “Footprints in the Community supports people living in Redcar and Cleveland to help reduce poverty and isolation and improve health and wellbeing.
“Sadly, we have seen a large increase in people needing to use our services, particularly the foodbank over the past year or so. Our vision for the area is that people will be self-sufficient, free from poverty and isolation and have hope for their future. We hope that this joined-up working will go some way to helping achieve this.”
The Cost-of-living Crisis Response Event will take place from 10.00am to 12.00pm on Friday 16 June at Teesside University. Local charities and organisations are invited to attend to share knowledge and contribute to the new poverty charter.
Join us from 10.00am – 12.00pm on Friday 16 June, at our Middlesbrough campus.
